Toshiba M12 Series launch
Advancing High-Density Storage for Modern Data Centers
MBUZZ expands its enterprise storage portfolio with the Toshiba M12 Series Nearline HDD from Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH, enabling higher-density and more efficient storage deployment across cloud and AI infrastructures.
Built on Toshiba’s advanced design and analysis capabilities, the M12 Series introduces an 11-disk configuration, exceeding previous generations by adding an additional platter. The transition from conventional aluminium substrates to glass-based recording media enables a thinner, more durable design, while the helium-sealed enclosure improves thermal efficiency and overall reliability.
The drives integrate Flux Control Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR™) with Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) to achieve capacities of up to 34TB. To address the inherent challenges of SMR—particularly around random write performance—the M12 Series adopts a host-managed SMR architecture, allowing the host system to control data placement and rewriting. This results in more efficient data handling and improved performance consistency in large-scale storage environments.
Key Technical Highlights
- Up to 282 MiB/s throughput (~8% improvement vs previous gen)
- ~18% lower power per TB for improved data center efficiency
- 550TB annual workload rating | 2.5M hours MTBF | 0.35% AFR
- Designed for 24/7 nearline and cloud-scale operations
Designed for 24/7 nearline and cloud-scale operations
The M12 Series is engineered for:
- Hyperscale cloud storage & object storage platforms
- AI/ML data pipelines and data lakes
- Video streaming and content distribution networks (CDN)
- Backup, archive, and cold data tiers
The host-managed SMR model aligns with modern software-defined storage stacks, enabling better control over data placement and efficiency in large-scale deployments.
